Today we celebrate the 236th birthday of our great nation. Some of us will spend our day celebrating at the beach, some will have backyard cookouts, and many will take in a fireworks show. But before we do those things today I would like to ask everyone to take a moment and reflect. Reflect on what this day is truly about. I would like to ask each of you to stop and think, and I mean really think, about the sacrifices that were made, by Americans just like you and me, so that we may have the opportunity to live as a free people.
The reason I ask this is because our country has reached a dangerous fork in the road. Our freedoms are seriously in jeopardy. Last week’s supreme court ruling on the health care law’s individual mandate sets a dangerous precedent. Not only does it give the federal government unlimited power to tax us but it also moves us further down the road to socialism. The only chance we have to repeal this mandate is to defeat President Obama in November.
As I type this our country is over $16 trillion in debt but our federal government continues to spend and actually has begun to encourage people to sign up for government assistance. The same government assistance that allows your tax dollars to be spent on cell phones, beer and cigarettes. (Remember that the next time you have to miss a family function or holiday for work.) This is not the federal government’s money, the government doesn’t make money, it’s our money, money that we work for. And while I do realize that there are members of our society who need government assistance I am also aware that there are people who take advantage of the system because they think they are owed something and are too sorry to get out and work for it.
We have a power hungry president who sidesteps Congress by issuing executive orders whenever Congress fails to pass legislation that furthers his big government agenda. And speaking of Congress, our legislative branch is filled with career politicians who have been allowed to play by a different set of rules than the rest of us and like our president have learned that the promise of free stuff aka taxpayer funded programs might help them stay in office.
Instead of the federal government fearing the American people they now treat us like subjects. They do this because they think they can. They know that we are busy raising families, and trying to make a living. They know it is hard for us to keep up with everything going on in Washington and they take advantage of that. They think we are stupid enough to fall for their sound bites and finger pointing.
The American people are what made this country great and I believe that the qualities that existed in Americans then still exist in a lot of Americans today. It’s that same group I spoke of above, those Americans out there working hard, raising their families, and contributing to their communities , busy people who now have to rise to the call, because if we are going to remain a free country something has to change and that change has to start with us.
The general election this November is critical to the future of the United States. It will determine which fork of the road the United States travels. We can no longer pay lip service to patriotism. We have to become informed and active in politics. We have to start right now in our homes and communities. We have to raise our children to know that freedom isn’t free. We need to teach them about the history of this country, talk to them about the sacrifices that were made and have to continue to be made to keep our country free. We have to instill in them the values that made this country great. We have to make sure our representatives hear from us. We have to be willing to question them, and demand accountability and transparency from them. We have to always be willing to stand up for our freedoms, we can’t wait on someone to do it for us. We have to get out and talk to people, educate them, organize, join groups that promote American values and vote in every election. We owe it to our forefathers and our children to reclaim this country.
